As a great testimony to the editing activities of Baltic historians and archivists, the "Liv-, Est- und Kurländische Urkundenbuch" is the most important source edition on the history of late medieval Livonia, the area of today's Estonia and Latvia, and serves as an indispensable instrument for researching Baltic history. After 15 volumes had appeared in quick succession by 1914, the project stalled due to political and scientific organizational vicissitudes, and there remained a gap stretching from 1472 to 1494. Closing this gap has been a project of the Baltic Historical Commission for some time, which is now being completed with a comprehensive, produces its first result in a large format volume rich in content.Dealing with the politically turbulent events of the 1470s as well as with the cultural and economic developments is placed on a completely new basis by the diverse, hitherto largely unknown source material.
